Stopping Distance
Reaction time is the time it
takes to get a foot to the brake after you recognize a hazard.
For the average driver, reaction time is three quarters of a
second.
Reaction distance is the distance
your vehicle travels along reaction time. It is measured in feet
and is calculated by adding the first digit of your speed to
your total speed.
- At 55 miles per hour, the
reaction distance is 60 feet.
- At 65 miles per hour, the
reaction distance is 71 feet.
Breaking distance is the distance
the vehicle travels from the time the brake is applied until the
vehicle stops. It is affected by speed and other factors,
including weather and road conditions. The following braking
distances are based on good driving conditions:
- At 55 miles per hour,
braking distance is 132 to 164 feet. The total stopping
distance is 192-224 feet.
- At 65 miles per hour,
braking distance is 196 to 245 feet. The total stopping
distance is 267-316 feet.
